The transit time to most locations is usually 1-3 business days, however 4 day transit times are possible. We ship Monday-Thursday, no shipping on Fridays. Online orders placed after noon Pacific time will usually ship the next day, though some orders may be shipped the same day depending on the circumstances. Online orders placed Thursday after noon Pacific time, or Friday-Sunday will usually ship the following Monday. Oils are pressed to order, usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and will require an extra 24-48 hrs processing time. All references to transit time do NOT include processing time and refer only to the time the order is actually in transit AFTER it ships. FedEx/UPS Ground service transit times include only “business” days which are Monday-Friday. USPS Priority Mail includes Monday-Saturday. In order to minimize transit time, if you order raw cultured vegetables of any kind including sauerkraut, kim chi, salsa, pickles or ketchup, we may hold your order for the following Monday if we determine that there is a chance they could spend extra days in transit over the weekend. For example, if your order for raw cultured vegetables is shipping to a location with a likely 3-day transit time and is received anytime after approximately noon Pacific time on Tuesday it will usually ship out the following Monday so that it does not spend any extra days in transit over the weekend (some may ship the same day depending on the circumstances).
Please remember with all shipping options you never count the first day out as part of the transit time, you start counting on the following day.
To determine which service your order will ship with please see the section of information above titled “What shipping service will be used?” Unless the order is being shipped with OnTrac the only way to guarantee delivery on a specific day is to call us at 800-805-7957 and arrange expedited/guaranteed service.
Nut and seed butter, chocolate, oil and tea will NOT automatically be insulated with styrofoam and ice. If you would like to add insulation to your order of nut/seed butter, chocolate, oil or tea, you can add it to your cart from the insulation product page. We recommend refrigeration of these foods to retain as much freshness as possible over time, but not to prevent immediate spoilage. The nut/seed butter, oil or chocolate would have to get over approx 115˚ inside the jar to be hotter than the temperature at which they are processed so we do not expect even warm weather to harm them in any way, but of course you do have the option to add insulation if you choose.
All orders with raw cultured vegetables including sauerkraut, kim chi, salsa, pickles and ketchup will automatically ship in our Pre-Made-Insulated box. Due to the live nature of the probiotics, leakage of juice is still possible even with insulation. Leakage does NOT indicate spoilage and we fully expect the veggies to be beneficial to eat after days of transit with insulation. Insulation will minimize leakage, although not always eliminate it. The important thing for you the customer to do is: as soon as possible after you receive: (before opening jars) refrigerate jars in the coldest non-frozen part of your refrigerator (as close as possible to 33 or 34 degrees).
Some companies pack their cultured vegetables in dry ice and use a slower shipping method, but lab tests have shown that freezing the cultured vegetables does damage the probiotic content, despite these companies telling customers that it doesn't. We recently had a lab test showing that freezing decreased the live probiotic count from 46 million per gram to 1.2 million per gram. So while it is true that some probiotics may survive, we do not feel that it is right to sell cultured vegetables this way while representing them as live as some other companies do. So while we sincerely wish that we had less expensive options for shipping raw cultured vegetables, and could make more money by compromising quality and truth, we do believe that preserving the quality and probiotic activity, as well as our integrity, is paramount. After all, the whole reason most customers seek raw cultured vegetables is to enhance their health, not just to have a tasty side dish. When you order from us you know that you will be getting potent, live probiotics that will be beneficial for your health..
The culturing or fermentation process that occurs with Raw Cultured Vegetables is a natural method of food preservation. This means that they can be safely unrefrigerated for days in transit. As the temperature rises, the probiotics in the Raw Cultured Vegetables become more active and begin consuming the sugars and starches in the vegetables at a faster rate. They release effervescence as part of their metabolic process (this is the zing you sometimes feel on your tongue when eating Raw Cultured Vegetables). The effervescence can push the juice up causing it to leak out of the jar, it can make the lid puffy and it can even make the vegetables expand out of the jar when you open it. This natural expansion results in Raw Cultured Vegetables that are more potent with probiotics, and may have a shorter shelf life. How much shorter the shelf life will be depends on the transit time and temperatures to which they are subjected. The longer and hotter the transit, the shorter the shelf life will be. They are still beneficial to eat until the probiotics have consumed all the available sugars and starches in the veggies at which point they will no longer taste palatable, and may be browning/discolored. Our labels state that Raw Cultured Vegetables should be refrigerated unless in transit for less than 9 days at less than 74˚ (or 77˚ depending on which flavor you have). Insulated packaging is a simple way to protect raw cultured vegetables from heat or freeze related changes that may occur while in transit, so that is why all orders with raw cultured vegetables will automatically be insulated. The important thing for you the customer to do is: as soon as possible after you receive: (before opening jars) refrigerate jars in the coldest non-frozen part of your refrigerator (as close as possible ro 33 or 34 degrees).
