What is Xylitol?
Xylitol is a natural, low-calorie sweetener, commonly used in sugar-free gum and candy. Since it measures very low on the glycemic index and has the ability to assist in stabilizing blood sugar, it is a suitable sugar alternative for diabetics. (Please consult your doctor before use.) Xylitol is a naturally occurring substance in the fibers of many plants, trees, fruits and vegetables, which provides additional health benefits, as well. Some other potential benefits of xylitol use include: dental health, antioxidant support, and reduction in middle ear infections.
Xylitol and Dental Health
Xylitol is the only sweetener known to actually improve dental health by reducing the pH level in the mouth. This creates a more alkaline environment in the mouth, which retards the growth of acid-forming bacteria and makes it more difficult for plaque to stick to the surface of teeth. Research has also shown that the use of xylitol may also assist in strengthening and repairing weakened tooth enamel by improving the pH of saliva, which supports the natural re-mineralization process of the teeth.
Xylitol and Antioxidant Support
Xylitol can also offer antioxidant support by assisting in activating glutathione pathways in the body. This aids in reducing oxidative stress and free radical damage in the body. Enhanced glutathione production has also been shown to enhance the effects of other antioxidants, supporting overall wellness. Xylitol has also been shown to assist in the production of glycogen to support healthy anabolic and metabolic functions in the body, including energy production, insulin regulation and muscle recovery.
Xylitol and Ear Health
Otitis media (or middle ear infection) is the most common type of ear infection in young children. Research by the Cochrane Collaboration indicates that giving children xylitol in gum, syrup or lozenges twice a day reduces the risk of inner ear infections by 25 percent. Xylitol is a preventative measure only, meaning that xylitol does not aid in the reduction of symptoms in people with existing ear infections.
Birch-Tree Xylitol
Birch tree xylitol is considered to be the highest quality source of xylitol on the market. Corn xylitol, which usually comes from China, is a cheaper source of xylitol and is typically made from genetically modified corn. Rejuvenative Foods uses only non-GMO birch tree xylitol in our products, as our stated goal is to use the best possible ingredients available in all our foods.
